Textual Analysis

The Jam-Going Underground

The Jam are an English band who were around during the 1970’s and 80’s. Their genre of music was punk rock/mod.

In this video, The Jam are mainly just performing in front of the camera in a room with a white background, with the artists wearing all black clothing. This is good as it makes them stand out more from the background, making them more radiant and better seen.

At the beginning of the video they also use a green screen which I feel is very effective because it shows the instruments appear on a set ready for the band to go and start playing them.

There are many shots in this video, the average shot length is about 4-5 seconds as it shows different angles/shots of them singing the whole song. There are also some jump cuts which shows Paul Weller going back and forth on the screen.

They have applied some features of Andrew Godwin’s theory as they have used a relationship between music and visuals. This is when they are performing and editing is changing in time with the beat. There is also an intertextual reference when it uses a few clips of bombs that has gone off Pre filming, and they use them throughout the clip.

Introductory post

Hello!
My name is Rae Griffiths and I am now studying my second year of the Media Studies course. This year we will be creating a music video as our final production piece. I'm really looking forward to it as I love listening to music and also being creative, so making the music video will be something I find really fun, especially as I'll be making it with my friends:)
I will keep you updated on here with everything I do this year building up to, during and after the music video!
See you soon:)
